History

At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School our history curriculum is designed to stimulate children’s interest and understanding about the past. We aim to fire children’s curiosity about the past and understand how significant people, places and events have influenced our life today

  • We teach children a sense of chronology and through this they develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage.
  • We teach children to investigate past events and, by doing so, develop the skills of historical enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving.
  • We encourage children to think like historians, examining artefacts and primary resources to make their own conclusions about the past

In each key stage children will have the opportunities to visit sites of historical importance related to their topic, as well as learn from specialist visitors who come into school to deliver interactive workshops about the past. These enrichment opportunities bring history to life for our children, they deepen their knowledge and understanding in this subject area allowing them to make connections and conclusions for themselves.

Our children take part in whole school acts of remembrance, such as Armistice Day and Holocaust Memorial Day. As well as significant present-day historical events such as Royal Weddings, HM Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and sporting achievements in The World Cup and Olympics. 

They will also participate in an annual whole school 'History Day' where children and staff come into school dressed as significant people from the past and spend the day learning about a specific area of history.

Our cross-curricular approach to history is a creative way to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding while motivating them to learn through stimulating topics. 

We want our children to have a love of history and a passion for learning about the past.
