Our approach to teaching children & young people with SEN

Our SEN Approach

Inclusive education means supporting all pupils to learn, contribute and participate in all aspects of school life alongside their peers. Our curriculum includes, not only the formal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum / National Curriculum, but also a range of additional opportunities to enrich the experiences of all pupils.

The Curriculum also included the social aspects that are essential for lifelong learning, personal growth and development of independence.

At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School we endeavor to support every child regardless of their level of needs by providing high levels of teaching and understanding every individual child. We pride ourselves on knowing every child personally and we ensure that they are taught accordingly. We have specialist rooms and areas within our school to allow children with additional needs space and time if they need to work in different areas.

  • We ensure pupils follow Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum/ National Curriculum at a level and pace that is appropriate to their ability by meeting with other teachers to discuss every individual need. We also group the children accordingly to ensure they are working at a level that provides challenge but allows the children to feel confident and supported. Children who require additional support have allocated staff working with them during lesson times.
  • Independence is encouraged by all staff and we always support children to their best ability. We ensure we challenge the children and provide time throughout the day for children to promote independent skills. Whether that be academically or personally.
