School Admissions

Apply now for a primary school place - deadline 15 January 2027

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent or carer for your child. The guidance on these pages is designed to help you to apply for a school place.

  • If your child's birthday falls between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023 your child will start Reception at an infant or primary school in September 2027.
  • If your child's birthday falls between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 and your child currently attends an infant school, they will start junior school in September 2027.

You must make an application for your child's school place as there is no automatic transfer from either nursery school to infant or primary school (Reception intake) or infant school to junior school (Year 3 intake).

The closing date to apply for a primary school place for September 2027 is midnight on Friday 15 January 2027.

If you require any further information or support with admissions please contact school.

Applying for a school place if your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan or a Statement of SEN

Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (or Statement of Special Education Needs) follow a different admission and transfer process for a new school.  Please continue to complete Durham County Council’s parental preference form, as part of the admission process to a new school.  You continue to have a right to request a particular school and this will be considered alongside the information that we have about your child’s special educational needs.  The information would have been provided as part of the Education, Health and Care assessment or following the review meeting.

At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School, we pride ourselves on having a caring, inclusive ethos. If your child has Special Educational Needs or a Disability, please contact us to arrange a visit.

Equally, if you have concerns over potential needs before you decide to apply for a place at our school, Miss Halton, our SENDCO, will happily discuss the provision on offer for your child in our school, in accordance to the Code of Practice 2014. We will discuss and plan together for the needs of your child as an individual, ensuring that they start at our school in a well-supported, caring manner.

We make a commitment to providing the nurturing, progressive education that your child deserves, regardless of their needs. We would ask parents to discuss the identified needs with the school prior to starting so that appropriate intervention and support can be planned and implemented. Advice from the LA or other agencies may be requested to ensure any the school can meet any needs appropriately.

If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
